The story of the cross is related in the Holy Scriptures.
十字架的故事记载在圣经之中。
They uniformly teach us to look upon Christ’s death in a light totally different from that of any other person.
圣经始终如一地教导我们，以一种完全不同于任何他人的眼光来看待基督的死。
They never mention it without emphasis, nor without admiration.
他们从未在没有强调、也没有赞叹的情况下提及这件事。
When the great Ruler of the world was pleased to accomplish his purposes of mercy toward sinful man,
当这世界的大统治者乐意向有罪的人类成就祂怜悯的旨意时，
he saw fit to do it in a way that expressed the mysterious fullness of his own eternal nature.
祂认为合宜，要以一种彰显祂自己永恒本性之奥秘丰满的方式来成就此事。
God is one in nature, and in three persons.
上帝在本质上是一，在位格上却是三。
A fundamental article of the Christian religion is, that one of these three Divine persons became incarnate.
基督教信仰的一项基本教义就是：这三个位格中的一位成了肉身。
“The Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us.”
“道成了肉身，住在我们中间。”
“Unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given—and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.”
“因有一婴孩为我们而生，有一子赐给我们——祂的名必称为奇妙策士、全能的上帝、永在的父、和平的君。”
“When the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.”
“及至时候满足，上帝就差遣祂的儿子，为女子所生，且生在律法以下，要把律法以下的人赎出来，叫我们得着儿子的名分。”
His birth was humble, away from home, and in a manger;
祂的降生是卑微的，远离家乡，并且是在马槽里；
but it was announced by angelic voices,
然而却有天使的声音宣告这件事，
“Behold I bring you good tidings of great joy,…for unto you is born this day, in the city of David, a SAVIOR, who is Christ the Lord!”
“看哪，我报给你们大喜的信息……因今天在大卫的城里，为你们生了救主，就是主基督！”
Behold the wonder!—the immortal Deity clothed with the nature of mortal man—the Everlasting One born in time—the God Omnipotent enveloped in the confines of infancy, and lying in a manger!
看哪，这奇妙的事！——不朽的神性披戴了必死之人的本性——永恒者在时间中诞生——全能的上帝被包裹在婴孩的局限之中，躺卧在马槽里！
This was the beginning of the Savior’s sorrows.
这正是救主忧患的开端。
Had he any sense of loftiness to be subdued,
若祂有任何需要被压制的崇高感，
any honest pride of character to be wounded,
有任何正直品格的自尊需要被刺伤，
any inbred sentiments of virtuous exaltation to be mortified,
有任何内在的高尚自尊需要被治死，
it would be in the prospect of such mysterious humiliation as this.
那必定是在面对如此奥秘而深重的卑微之时。
No pomp of earth was there;
那里毫无属世的排场；
no show of worldly magnificence;
没有世俗的华丽展示；
no regal splendor;
没有王者的荣耀；
though there slept on that pallet of straw One who “on his robe and thigh was written this Title—king of Kings and Lord of Lords.”
然而，在那稻草铺成的床上安睡的那一位，却是“在祂衣服和大腿上写着这名号——万王之王，万主之主”。
Judah’s crown and scepter might have belonged to his honored parents;
犹大的冠冕和权杖本可以属于祂尊贵的父母；
and he should of right have been born in the palace of David.
按理说，祂本该出生在大卫的宫殿中。
But this was ill fitting one who came to pour contempt upon the pride of man;
然而，这却不适合那一位来要倾覆人类骄傲的主；
whose “kingdom is not of this world,”
祂的“国不属这世界”，
and who, before he assumed this low attire, foresaw that he should put it off only on the cross.
并且在祂披戴这卑微外形之前，祂早已预见，自己唯有在十字架上才会脱去它。
