    The proper study of God’s elect, is God.
    神所选民的适当研究是上帝。

    The highest science, the loftiest speculation, the mightiest philosophy, which can ever engage the attention of a child of God-is the name, the nature, the person, the work, the doings, and the existence of the great God whom he calls his Father!
    能够引起神的儿女注意的最高科学、最崇高的思考、最强大的哲学——就是那位他称为父亲的伟大上帝的名字、性质、位格、工作、作为和存在!

    There is something exceedingly improving to the mind in a contemplation of the Divinity.
    沉思于神性对心灵是极为有益的。

    It is a subject so vast, that all our thoughts are lost in its immensity;
    这是一个如此浩瀚的主题,以至于我们所有的思考在其无垠的广度中迷失了方向;

    so deep, that our pride is drowned in its infinity!
    如此深邃,以至于我们的骄傲被其无尽所淹没!

    Other subjects we can compass and grapple with, in them we feel a kind of self-contentment,
    其他主题我们可以包罗万象,尽情探讨,在其中我们感到一丝自我满足,

    and go our way with the thought, “Behold I am wise!”
    然后自我陶醉,心中想着:“看啊,我是多么聪明!”

    But when we come to this master-science,
    但是当我们来面对这一门主科学时,

    finding that our plumb-line cannot sound its depth,
    发现我们的铅垂线无法探测它的深度,

    and that our eagle eye cannot see its height—
    而我们的鹰眼无法看到它的高度——

    we turn away with the thought that vain man would be wise,
    我们带着这样的想法转身离开:妄想聪明的凡人,

    but he is like a wild donkey’s colt;
    但他就像一匹野驴的驹子;

    and with the solemn exclamation, “I am but of yesterday, and know nothing!”
    并带着庄重的感叹:“我不过是昨天的事,什么都不知道!”

    No subject of contemplation will tend more to humble the mind, than thoughts of God.
    没有任何思考的主题能比对上帝的思考更能使心灵谦卑。

    The most excellent study for expanding the soul,
    扩展灵魂的最优秀的研究,

    is the science of Christ and Him crucified,
    是关于基督和他被钉十字架的科学,

    and the knowledge of the Godhead in the glorious Trinity.
    以及对荣耀三位一体的神性的认识。

    Nothing will so enlarge the intellect,
    没有什么能如此扩展智慧,

    nothing will so magnify the whole soul of man—
    没有什么能如此放大人的整个灵魂——

    as a devout, earnest, continued investigation of the great subject of the Deity.
    如对神性这一伟大主题的虔诚、认真、持续的探讨。

    While humbling and expanding,
    在谦卑和扩展的同时,

    this subject is eminently consolatory.
    这个主题是极具安慰性的。

    Oh, there is in contemplating Christ, a balm for every wound!
    哦,凝视基督,能为每一个创伤带来安慰!

    In musing on the Father, there is a quietus for every grief.
    在默想天父时,能为每一种悲伤带来平静。

    In the influence of the Holy Spirit, there is a balsam for every sore.
    在圣灵的影响下,能为每一处疼痛带来舒缓。

    Would you lose your sorrows?
    你想失去你的忧伤吗?

    Would you drown your cares?
    你想淹没你的烦恼吗?

    Then go, plunge yourself in the Godhead’s deepest sea!
    那么去吧,投入神性的最深海洋中!

    Be lost in His immensity, and you shall come forth as from a couch of rest, refreshed and invigorated.
    沉浸在他的无限之中,你将如同从安息的床榻上复苏而出,焕然一新,精神饱满。

    I know nothing which can . . .
    我不知道有什么能……

    so comfort the soul,
    如此安慰灵魂,

    so calm the swelling billows of grief and sorrow,
    如此平息悲伤与痛苦翻腾的巨浪,

    so speak peace to the winds of trial,
    如此向试炼的风浪诉说平安,

    as a devout musing upon the subject of the Godhead!
    如同虔诚思考神性的主题那样!

    Psalm 115:3 “Our God is in Heaven; He does whatever pleases Him!”
    诗篇 115:3 “我们的神在天上;他所愿意的都行!”

    Psalm 135:5-6 “I know that the LORD is great, that our Lord is greater than all gods! The LORD does whatever pleases Him, in the Heavens and on the earth, in the seas and all their depths!”
    诗篇 135:5-6 “我知道耶和华是伟大的,我们的主比所有的神都伟大!耶和华在天上、在地上、在海中和深渊里,所愿意的都行!”
