These words we see contain a Doctrine of the greatest consequence to the Soul of Man in the whole Scriptures, and that which is indeed the sum of them all.
我们看见这几句话包含着一项教义(Doctrine),乃是全本圣经(the whole Scriptures)中对人的灵魂(the Soul of Man)最为关键(of the greatest consequence)的,并且确实是全部圣经的总纲(the sum of them all)。
They contain the sum of man’s desires, Life, and the sum of God’s mercies, Christ, and the sum of man’s duty, Faith; Christ the Fountain, Life the Derivation, and Faith the Conveyance.
它们包含人的愿望之总和(the sum of man’s desires)——生命(Life),以及神的怜悯之总和(the sum of God’s mercies)——基督(Christ),以及人的本分之总和(the sum of man’s duty)——信心(Faith);基督是泉源(the Fountain),生命是流出(the Derivation),信心是传递(the Conveyance)。
Whatever things are excellent and desirable, are in the Scripture comprised under the name of Life, as the lesser under the greater; for Life is better than meat, and the body than mere sustenance.
凡一切美善(excellent)与可羡慕(desirable)的事物,在圣经中都总括(comprised)在“生命”(Life)这名称之下,如同小者归于大者(as the lesser under the greater);因为生命胜于饮食(meat),身体胜于单单的维持(mere sustenance)。
And whatever Excellencies can be named, we have them all from Christ.
并且凡一切可称述的美德(Excellencies),我们都从基督(Christ)得着。
In Him, says the Apostle, are hidden the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
使徒说:在祂里面(In Him)藏着(hidden)智慧(wisdom)和知识(knowledge)的一切宝藏(the treasures)。
Hidden, not to the purpose that they may not be found, but to the purpose that they may be sought.
“藏着”(Hidden)并不是为着叫人找不着(may not be found),乃是为着叫人寻求(may be sought)。
And we may note from the expression, that Christ is a Treasurer of his Father’s Wisdom;
并且我们可以从这说法(the expression)注意到:基督(Christ)乃是祂父的智慧之司库(a Treasurer of his Father’s Wisdom);
He has Wisdom, as the King’s treasurer has wealth, as an Officer, a Depository, a Dispenser of it to the friends and servants of his father.
祂拥有智慧(Wisdom),如同王的司库(the King’s treasurer)拥有财富(wealth)一样;作为一位官员(an Officer)、一个保管者(a Depository)、一个分施者(a Dispenser),把这智慧分给祂父的朋友与仆人(the friends and servants of his father)。
He is made unto us Wisdom.
祂成了我们的智慧(He is made unto us Wisdom)。
The Apostle says that in him there are unsearchable riches, an inexhaustible treasury of Grace and Wisdom.
使徒说:在祂里面有测不透的丰富(unsearchable riches),乃是恩典(Grace)与智慧(Wisdom)取之不尽的宝库(an inexhaustible treasury)。
And there needs to be a treasure of riches in him, for there is a treasure of sin in us:
并且在祂里面必须有丰富的宝藏(a treasure of riches),因为在我们里面有罪的宝藏(a treasure of sin):
so our Saviour calls it, the treasure of an evil heart.
我们的救主(our Saviour)就是这样称它为:恶心(an evil heart)的宝藏(the treasure)。
He was full of Grace and Truth.
祂满有恩典(Grace)和真理(Truth)。
Not as a vessel, but as a Fountain, and as a Sun;
不是像器皿(a vessel),乃是像泉源(a Fountain),又像日头(a Sun);
to note that He was not only full of Grace, but that the fullness of Grace was in Him.
这表明(to note)祂不但满有恩典(full of Grace),并且恩典的丰满(the fullness of Grace)是在祂里面(was in Him)。
It pleased the Father that in him should all fullness dwell.
父喜悦(It pleased the Father)叫一切的丰满(all fullness)都住在祂里面(in him should … dwell)。
God gave not the Spirit in measure unto Him.
神(God)赐圣灵(the Spirit)给祂(unto Him)不是有限量的(not … in measure)。
And as there is a fullness in Him, so there is a Communion in us,
并且既然在祂里面有丰满(a fullness in Him),照样在我们里面也有相通(a Communion);
Of his fullness we receive Grace for Grace,
我们从祂的丰满里(Of his fullness)领受恩上加恩(Grace for Grace),
that is, as a Child in generation receives from his Parents member for member,
也就是说,如同孩子在生育(generation)之中从父母(his Parents)领受肢体对肢体(member for member),
or the paper from the Press letter for letter,
或者纸张(the paper)从印刷机(the Press)领受字母对字母(letter for letter),
or the glass from the face image for image;
或者镜子(the glass)从面容(the face)领受形像对形像(image for image);
so in regeneration Christ is fully formed in a man,
照样在重生(regeneration)之中,基督(Christ)就在一个人里面完全成形(is fully formed in a man),
and he receives in some measure and proportion Grace for Grace:
并且他就按着某种程度与比例(in some measure and proportion)领受恩上加恩(Grace for Grace):
there is no Grace in Christ appertaining to general sanctification which is not in some weak degree fashioned in Him.
基督里(in Christ)凡一切归于普遍成圣(general sanctification)的恩典(Grace),没有一项不是在他里面(in Him)以某种微弱的程度(in some weak degree)被塑造出来(fashioned)的。
Thus there is to Christ a fullness of Grace answerable to a fullness of sin which is in us.
因此,在基督那里(to Christ)有恩典的丰满(a fullness of Grace),与我们里面(which is in us)罪的丰满(a fullness of sin)相对应(answerable)。
The Prophet calls him a Prince of Peace,
先知(The Prophet)称祂为和平之君(a Prince of Peace),
not as Moses only was a man of peace, but a Prince of peace.
不是像摩西(Moses)仅仅是一个和平的人(a man of peace),而是和平的君王(a Prince of peace)。
If Moses had been a Prince of peace,
若摩西(Moses)曾是和平的君王(a Prince of peace),
how easily might he have instilled peaceable and calm affections into the mutinous and murmuring people?
他岂不就能何等容易地(how easily)把和平与安静的情感(peaceable and calm affections)灌输(instilled)进那悖逆并发怨言(mutinous and murmuring)的百姓(people)里面吗?
But though he had it in himself, yet he had it not to distribute.
但即便他自己里面有(he had it in himself),他却没有(had it not)可以分施(to distribute)的权柄与能力。
But Christ has Peace, as a King has Honours,
然而基督(Christ)拥有平安(Peace),如同君王(a King)拥有尊荣(Honours)一样,
to dispense and dispose of it to whom he will.
可以照祂所喜悦的(to whom he will)将其分施(dispense)并分配(dispose)。
Peace I leave with you, my Peace I give unto you.
我留下平安给你们(Peace I leave with you),我将我的平安赐给你们(my Peace I give unto you)。
If I should run over all the particulars of Grace or Mercy,
若我逐一列举(run over)一切恩典(Grace)或怜悯(Mercy)的各样细节(all the particulars),
we should find them all proceed from him;
我们就必发现(find)它们都从祂而出(all proceed from him);
He is our Passover, says the Apostle.
使徒说:祂是我们的逾越节(our Passover)。
As in Egypt wherever there was the blood of the Passover there was life, and where it was not, there was death;
正如在埃及(in Egypt),凡有逾越节羔羊之血(the blood of the Passover)的地方就有生命(there was life),没有的地方就有死亡(there was death);
so where this our Passover is, there is life; and where he is not, there is death:
照样,我们这逾越节(this our Passover)所在之处就有生命(there is life);祂不在之处就有死亡(there is death):
To me to live is Christ, says the Apostle;
使徒说:对我而言,活着就是基督(To me to live is Christ);
and again, now I live, yet not I, but Christ lives in me,
又说:如今活着的不再是我(now I live, yet not I),乃是基督在我里面活着(but Christ lives in me),
and the life that I live, I live by the Faith of the Son of God,
并且我如今在肉身中所活的生命(the life that I live),是因神的儿子(the Son of God)的信心(by the Faith)而活(I live),
who loved me, and gave himself for me.
祂爱我(who loved me),为我舍了祂自己(and gave himself for me)。
