    The multitude of Your tender mercies
    祢丰盛的慈爱

    (J. C. Philpot, “Man’s Misery and God’s Mercy” 1867)
    J. C. 菲尔波特,《人的苦难与神的怜悯》1867年

    “Have mercy upon me, O God, according to Your loving-kindness—according unto the multitude of Your tender mercies blot out my transgressions.”
    “神啊,求祢按祢的慈爱怜恤我,按祢丰盛的慈悲涂抹我的过犯。”

    Psalm 51:1
    诗篇51:1

    What a sweet expression it is—and how it seems to convey to our mind that God’s mercies do not fall ‘drop by drop’—but are as innumerable . . ..
    这是何等甜美的表达——它似乎向我们传达,神的怜悯并非”点点滴滴”地降下——而是无法计数的. . ..

    as the sand upon the sea-shore;
    如同海边的沙粒;

    as the stars that stud the midnight sky;
    如同点缀午夜天空的繁星;

    as the drops of rain that fill the clouds before they discharge their copious showers upon the earth.
    如同云层中的雨滴,在倾泻大量雨水到地上之前。

    It is the multitude of His mercies that makes Him so merciful a God.
    正是祂丰盛的怜悯使祂成为如此仁慈的神。

    He does not give but a drop or two of mercy—that would soon be gone, like the rain which fell this morning under the hot sun.
    祂所赐的不只是一两滴怜悯——那很快就会消失,就像今早在炎热阳光下落下的雨。

    But His mercies flow like a river!
    但祂的怜悯如河流般涌流!

    There is in Him . . .
    在祂里面有. . .

    a multitude of mercies,
    丰盛的怜悯,

    for a multitude of sins,
    为着众多的罪,

    and a multitude of sinners!
    为着众多的罪人!

    This felt and received in the love of it—breaks, humbles, softens, and melts a sensible sinner’s heart—and he says, “What, sin against such mercies?
    当在爱中感受并领受这一切时——它击破、降卑、软化并融化一个有知觉罪人的心——他说:”什么,竟然得罪这样的怜悯?

    What, when the Lord has remembered me in my low estate, and manifested once more a sense of His mercy?
    什么,当主在我卑微的光景中记念我,并再次显明祂的怜悯时?

    What, shall I go on to provoke Him again—walk inconsistently again—be entangled in Satan’s snares again?
    什么,我还要继续惹动祂——再次行事不一致——再次陷入撒但的网罗吗?

    O, forbid it God, forbid it gospel, forbid it tender conscience, forbid it every constraint of dying love!”
    啊,求神禁止,福音禁止,温柔的良心禁止,求那舍命之爱的每一个约束都禁止!”

    “Have mercy upon me, O God, according to Your loving-kindness—according unto the multitude of Your tender mercies blot out my transgressions.”
    “神啊,求祢按祢的慈爱怜恤我,按祢丰盛的慈悲涂抹我的过犯。”

    Psalm 51:1
    诗篇51:1
