Patience and Its Perfect Work: Enduring Sudden and Sore Trials with Joy: An Exposition of James 1:1–5

“James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting.

My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;
我的弟兄们,你们落在百般试炼中,都要以为大喜乐;

knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.

But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”—James 1:1-5

For centuries, this treasured volume by the great Puritan theologian Thomas Goodwin has served as a quiet companion to weary saints enduring the crucible of suffering.

Long regarded as one of the hidden gems among Puritan devotional writings, it is rich in Scripture, steeped in heavenly wisdom, and overflowing with pastoral warmth.

Patience and Its Perfect Work offers a soul-strengthening exposition of James 1:1–5—guiding believers not only to endure sudden and sore trials, but to find joy in the very heart of them.

Goodwin’s burden is clear: that Christ’s people would grow into a full and fruitful patience, perfected through affliction by the gracious hand of God.

With theological clarity and deep spiritual insight, he shows that true Christian endurance is not born of stoic resolve, but of a faith rooted in divine wisdom, nurtured through prayer, and sustained by the glorious power of God.

Now presented in a dual format—both the original 17th-century edition and a faithfully modernized version—this work is made accessible to a new generation of readers.

The updated language preserves Goodwin’s profound theology and heartfelt piety, making it ideal for devotional reading, pastoral ministry, and encouragement in seasons of trial.

Whether you are in the midst of suffering or preparing for it, Patience and Its Perfect Work will help you lay hold of Christ more deeply, love God more enduringly, and glorify Him more fully—through every storm.

“Count it all joy…”—this book shows you how, not with trite answers, but with truth tested by fire.

Historical Note:

The four sermons in Patience and Its Perfect Work were forged in the fires of real affliction.

Goodwin preached and wrote them in the aftermath of London’s darkest hours.

In 1665, the Great Plague struck, claiming over 68,000 lives.

While the king and his court fled the city, Goodwin remained, faithfully ministering amidst death and despair.

Before the plague had even subsided, the Great Fire of London broke out in September 1666, destroying over 13,200 homes and 87 churches.

Goodwin’s own home came under threat.

In an effort to preserve his treasured library, he had more than half of his books moved to a friend’s home.

Providentially, a shift in the wind spared Goodwin’s house, but the friend’s was consumed by fire—along with the volumes he had tried to save.

Grieved by the loss of his library, which he valued at over £500, Goodwin turned to the Word of God for comfort.

From James 1:1–5, he drew strength, and from that strength he penned this work: Patience and Its Perfect Work under Sudden and Sore Trials.

He continued his labors until his death on February 23, 1679, and was laid to rest in Bunhill Fields, alongside many faithful witnesses who endured much and counted it all joy.
