Christ Set Forth: In His Death, Resurrection, Ascension, Sitting at God’s Right Hand, and Intercession

This classic Puritan work by Thomas Goodwin is a deeply pastoral, theologically rich meditation on the glorious offices and saving work of Jesus Christ.

Drawing from Romans 8:34, Goodwin sets forth Christ in all the fullness of His redemptive accomplishments: His atoning death, victorious resurrection, triumphant ascension, royal enthronement, and ongoing intercession.

With warmth and doctrinal precision, he leads the reader to behold Christ not merely as a doctrine to affirm, but as a Savior to trust, adore, and rest in—both in life and in death.

What makes this work especially powerful is its relentless focus on Christ as the object of justifying faith.

Goodwin labors to strengthen weak believers, lifting their eyes from themselves to Christ, and anchoring their hope not in feelings or performance, but in the finished and continuing work of the Redeemer.

He writes not as a detached theologian, but as a shepherd of souls, gently drawing the weary and doubting to the all-sufficiency of Christ.

In the updated edition, Goodwin’s language has been faithfully modernized for clarity and accessibility.

His seventeenth-century prose—though rich and rigorous—is famously dense, often marked by long, winding sentences and layered argumentation.

This version retains the full theological seriousness and doctrinal precision of the original, but with updated grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary.

Key doctrines remain untouched.

Repetitions are lightly abridged.

Long paragraphs are broken up for readability.

Scriptural references are clearly cited (e.g., “Romans 8:34” instead of “Rom. 8.34”), and bold section headings have been added to guide the reader through each unfolding thought.

This is not a paraphrase.

It is a careful stewardship of a treasured work—refined so that today’s reader can sit under Goodwin’s Christ-centered ministry without distraction or difficulty.

Whether you’re a pastor, a student of theology, or a struggling believer in need of assurance, Christ Set Forth will lift your eyes to the risen and reigning Christ, who lives even now to intercede for His people.
